Firstly, do not confuse the Waterberg District with the Waterberg plateau, which is the physical mountain range that encompasses an area of around 15 000 km2 within the district that is the subject of my story. The Waterberg is almost half as old as the Earth itself with a plateau that rises like a gigantic saucer between a northern and southern fault zone. When land masses on either side of the fault zone moved, they formed a huge basin surrounded by mountains.
